£130m biomass plant for North-East Lincolnshire

20 April 2012 - 987 views

MONKS BROOK - Plans for a £130m biomass-fuelled energy plant in North-East Lincolnshire have been approved by UK councillors. The wood-burning power plant will be built in Immingham and could create up to 250 jobs, developers Real Ventures say.

The plant will be built on land owned by Associated British Ports (ABP).

“From the first export of coal nearly one hundred years ago to powering today’s electricity generation, the port of Immingham has been intrinsically linked with the business of energy production,” says ABP’s Port Director, John Fitzgerald. “As energy generation moves towards an increasingly renewable basis, so we too adapt our service to handle these new cargoes.  We are therefore delighted to be working with Real Ventures on this exciting renewable energy project.”

The "Reality Project" will....

  • Employ 35 people directly and 200 to 250 people during the construction phase of 30 months
  • Produce 42% of North East Lincolnshire's Electricity from renewable sources
  • Create immediate and significant carbon savings - 190,000 tonnes CO2 p.a.
  • Use 100% virgin wood fuel - predominantly imported by ship
  • Through the use of high quality fuel, allow a very efficient plant design
  • Aim: To be the most efficient system of its type globally
  • "Best Available Techniques" applied throughout the design process
  • Re-use existing industrial site
  • Switch on in 2015 as UK electricity supply starts to dwindle
