Intelligent level measurement with radar technology

06 June 2012 - 872 views

QUICKBORN - With the MBA300 and MBA400, MBA (Level measurement technology for bulk materials, conductivity measurement of light petroleum products) offers contact-free measurement with a high degree of measurement accuracy.

During the measurement with radar technology, microwave impulses are emitted from an antenna to the surface of the bulk material, reflected from the surface and received by the electronics. The time span between the sending and receiving of the signals is proportional to the filling level in the container. A special time expansion procedure enables the secure and precise signal evaluation of the extremely short operating times. The radar measurement can be performed irrespective of the dust contamination in containers such as silos. In particularly difficult environments the connected air rinse unit ensures the “unobstructed view” of the radar antenna.

MBA Instruments GmbH offers two products from the field of radar technology in order to meet all customer requirements in regard to measurement technology:

MBA300 has been optimised for the filling level measurement of bulk material. The filling height in silos, bunkers or other containers as well as of heaps is continuously measured by means of radar impulses. Areas of application can for instance be found in the food industry, plastic processing and steel manufacture as well as the construction industry. The MBA300 is easily and quickly installed with a mounting bracket. The maximum measurement height is 35 metres. The product measures in a contact-free manner, independent of pressure, temperature, gas, dust and sound. A 2-conductor supplies voltage and the signal. Adjustments can be performed directly on the unit; a computer is not required.

In addition to the properties of the MBA300, the MBA400 has been constructed for the level measurement of bulk materials and liquids even under challenging operating conditions. Both the mechanical construction as well as the electronics has been optimised for this application. “With the MBA400 it is possible to measure the filling level precisely and reliably even in narrow containers or containers with built-in components. For this, we offer different shapes and lengths of the antenna”, Hans-Heinrich Westphal, managing director of MBA Instruments GmbH explains. Different installation possibilities (G 1 ½ or flange) and an optional swivel connection transform the unit into a universally usable measuring instrument that can measure at a maximum height of 75 metres. It is equipped with intelligent signal processing. An air rinse connection for the cleaning of the antenna system is optional.

Depending on the conditions, with radar technology different antennas are used:

Parabolic antenna
The microwave signal is emitted from the sender/receiver section and is radiated by the antenna surface in a focussed manner. The entire antenna system can be removed for easy installation.

Horn antenna
The microwave signal is emitted via the sender/receiver section and is radiated in the direction of the antenna opening towards the bulk material surface. The curved antenna edge minimises antenna noise and in this manner increases sensitivity in the close-up range.

Plastic horn antenna
The impedance cone evenly distributes microwaves in the interior of the antenna. The metallic inside directs the microwave signals towards the product. The light and compact construction enables excellent focussing.
