New fertilizer plant opens

29 June 2012 - 2569 views

BALTIMORE, MD - The A.J. Sackett and Sons Company recently completed a new fertilizer handling and blending system for a southern cooperative.

A fire destroyed the original facility which is located in Lumberton, North Carolina, United States. The new facility operates on a Loss-In-Weight concept which precisely blends different ingredients to meet farmers demands.

The system begins as fertilizer is unloaded by rail cars and trucks for storage into the new 17,000 ton building.

Two under track unloading stations and one truck unloading station move material at 200 tons per hour by means of a heavy duty, stainless steel, Sackett Bulk-Toter a length of 86 feet.

From there, a stainless steel Sackett Bucket Elevator continuously lifts fertilizer 46 feet onto a reversing shuttle belt conveyor.

The reversing shuttle can move fertilizer to any of the buildings holding bins dependably.

Plant operators load a series of hoppers with different fertilizer ingredients when operating.

Major, trace, and micro ingredient hoppers are heavy duty, stainless steel, and can hold up to 10 tons of product.

Each hopper sets on stainless steel hermetically sealed load cells with tool steel mounts.

Special coatings and fertilizer enhancing products can be sprayed onto every particle as it is dispensed by a variable speed drive which control mesh chain feeders.

The feeders dose out the exact material onto a heavy duty, 30” wide, fixed frame, belt conveyor which layers the material as it enters into a continuous mixer at over 200 tons per hour.

Each batch is then moved into either holding bins or directly onto trucks or fertilizer spreaders.

The system is centrally controlled and 25 tons can be accurately blended and loaded in under 8 minutes.
