UAS dust collector overcomes operational challenges

27 June 2012 - 896 views

CINCINNATI, OH - United Air Specialists partnered with their local representative to provide a dust collection solution on an innovative 5-axis milling machine application at a prominent Southern California aerospace company.

The challenges presented by this project included: a milling room that was air-conditioned, the extremely fast moving 5-axis milling machine and the length that the milling head had to travel as well as the need to capture collected material for recycling. The SFC Series cartridge dust collection system with a cyclone pre-filter was selected as an ideal solution. Unique adaptations were made to the cyclone to meet the customer’s specific needs.  UAS customized the cyclone’s dust collection base in order for the captured particulate to be reclaimed into specific containers required for the material to be recycled which resulted in operational savings for the customer.  In addition, a bin level indicator was integrated into the controls to shut down the operation when the collection containers became full. This prevented overfilling which would have reduced the system’s operational efficiency if dust would have been allowed to accumulate within the cyclone.

Collection was performed by dual means. First, two large source capture hoods were fitted as close to the cutting head as possible by utilizing a dual-tracking system of the ductwork that moved along the milling head’s track. The second method was four floor-mounted collection areas located around the perimeter of the machine that provided for general housekeeping collection of residual dust by the mill operator resulting in a cleaner milling room.  The collection system return was ducted to allow clean air to be exhausted back into the air-conditioned milling room which resulted in significant energy savings for the customer. The cartridge dust collector with cyclone pre-filter from UAS successfully overcame all of the challenges involved in this high-tech, precision-dependent process and has been working very effectively to the satisfaction of this customer.
